The highest mountain in Chilean Patagonia, Mount San Valentín or San Clemente is at the head of the Campo de Hielo Norte in the Laguna San Rafael National Park and Biosphere Reserve. Although remote and isolated it is considered technically accessible by expert mountaineers of good physical condition, but in Patagonia the unpredictable climate can alter the plans. Patagonia’s so-called White Roof, because it is covered by a huge perennial glacier, was discovered only in 1920 dominating the landscape of the lagoon and the San Rafael glacier with its 4,058 meters above sea level. The first ascent dates back to 1952. From its summit there is a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains that reaches To General Carrera Lake and San Lorenzo Hill on the binational boundary and to the west the Patagonian canals and archipelagoes. Valentine’s Day rewards those who dare that way.
