From San Pedro de Atacama, the obligatory start of any adventure in the Atacama Desert, traveling north and passing through devil’s Throat, a winding path between vertical walls, you reach Catarpe or Chuschul. This is an ancient pre-Inca Atacate settlement from which some ruins endure and within walking distance is the Inca Administrative Center dominating the valley. The brief Salt River, a tributary of the Rio Grande that we will cross again and again will accompany us during a stretch of the tour. Very ancient trails of troperos and petroglyphs, a lot of history and very ancient, occur during the walk to the pucará de Quitor built in the XII century and symbol that the culture licanantay, which was the defensive fortress of Atacameños and Incas in front of the Spanish invader. From a dominant high, a cyclopean wall forward and an impassable ravine behind, Quitor seemed impregnable but was taken over by Villagra.
