The adventure tourism of the North is in San Pedro de Atacama, in whose narrow streets there is a cosmopolitan air. In pre-Hispanic times here lived the Atacamean culture and today enjoys the prestige of being the Archaeological Center of Chile. The nearby attractions, the Valley of the Moon and death valley, are desolate desert landscapes of ochre colors and whimsical natural formations sculpted by erosion. Toconao and the sherry raveb are fertile oasis producing fruits and vegetables. Jerez is also renowned for its excellent wallings for sport climbing. The immense Salar de Atacama reveals some of its landscape and archaeological riches, first the Chaxa Lagoon populated with flamingos and then the ceremonial site of Tulan with its temple. The Miscanti and Miñiques highland lagoons, the most visited in the Los Flamencos National Reserve, are crystal clear waters and are surrounded by imposing Andean massifs. Flamingos, foxes and vicuñas observe visitors. The salt flats of Talar and especially the Kapur salt flat are places of singular beauty in the Atacama Desert. From the lagoon Lejía the ascent to the volcano Láscar with its 5450 m high will give us the widest panoramic view to the volcanoes of northern Chile. And from here, bordering Tara’s salt flat with the thrill of the final and major summit of this expedition: the Pili or Acamarachi (“stone snail” in Aymara) which will be our victory over one of Atacama’s six thousand. From the border town of Ollague you will soon reach the immense Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt desert in the world, with more than 10,000 km2 of continuous area, located at 3,650 meters above sea level. The unique Cactus Island is undoubtedly a must-see attraction in the salt flat. The trip will then guide us to the turquoise Coipasa lagoon and the now almost defunct Poopó Lake from which and almost without realizing it we will reach La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, guarded by the imposing Illimani and the entire Cordillera Real. The Huayna Potosí, “Cerro Joven” in Aymara, is a very popular mountain of the Bolivian Royal Cordillera located very close to La Paz whose ascent does not present greater technical demands. It’s said to be the easiest six thousand in the world. It has two summits, the north being the highest with 6,090 meters above sea level. reached by the most used route and recognized for being short and easy. The panorama from the summit rewards all the effort: the view over La Paz, the sunrise on the eastern slope and the majesty of the Cordillera Real, everything will be given gracefully to the visitor who dared and who will return to Peace satisfied with his experience in the heights. Back in Chile you cannot ignore the Sajama National Park and the highest summit in Bolivia that is well worth a stoppage. Lake Chungará with the bottom of the Nevados de Payachata is a spectacle of Nature and the incredible biodiversity that underpins the Altiplano. Following the descent towards the coast is the village of Putre, last arrest before reaching the Chilean Jewel of the North, the spring city of Arica.
