From Puerto Bertrand and across Lake Plomo you will start the hike bordering the Soler cordon over the river until you reach the unique conjunction of three valleys of hanging glaciers. The path to travel crosses rivers, rock breeders and soft sands that lead to Rancho Palomar in an ancient forest of nothofagus. Continuing for a few hours, the Nef glacier now proposes the challenge of wearing grampons and crossing its 7 km descending south over the Morrenic countryside and the cozy Espejo lagoon. The 1730 m Viewpoint allows a wide view over this part of the North Ice Field. The Buena Cueva valley, rich in beech forests and cypress wetlands, borders Lake Cachet II, recognized by geologists and glaciologists due to its newspapers emptying and fillings caused by the glacial action now increased by global warming amid one of the most remote and dynamic glacial systems in the world. The forests accompany the march towards the Heart Incognito lagoon, a drain of Cachet II, a beautiful glacial lake of intense blue. Guarded by Cerro Arenales, a long day will take you through the 437 km2 Cologne Glacier, the largest tongue to the southwest of the North Ice Field, to descend between forests by Lake Cologne and the lower valley of the river that leads to Cochrane and back to the Southern Highway.
