It is an ineffable feeling to travel along the rugged north bank of General Carrera Lake, Chile’s largest lake, of beautiful turquoise color due to its glacial origin, which the Tehuelches named Chelenco, “stormy waters”, before there was the border that now divides it between Chile and Argentina. At the beginning of the twentieth century colonization began and despite its cold and windy climate prospered towns and cities on its banks. Hudson Volcano eruptions in 1991 caused serious damage still visible to the area’s agriculture and livestock-based economy. It will be gratified to find authentic pioneers based in ignominious places, to know an ancient mining of lead and zinc in Puerto Cristal that was gravitating in the development of the entire province and to vade the Avellano River on horseback. The lake shows present and past confused in the landscape, and in the works and customs of the locals.
