The village of San Pedro de Atacama was the main center of The Atacama or Likanantai culture, well defended by the Quitor pucará since the 12th century that resisted the Spanish conquistadors. San Pedro still retains fifteen ayllus, remnants of a pre-Inca community socioeconomic organization. Currently this oasis of the Atacama Desert is considered the Archaeological Capital of Chile. Leaving town, the desert surprises us. The Valley of Death lives up to its name and the Valley of the Moon, Sanctuary of Nature, shows in its extreme lunar aridity the surprising beauty of capricious natural formations. Large pools of warm, emerging water await us in the Puritama Baths. Ascending you reach Rio Grande and Machuca, two villages of Atacam culture, the latter with a viewpoint at 4450 m. height. The effort to ascend to the Sairecabur volcano will be paid for with a visit to the Geiseres del Tatio, an immense geothermal field whose numerous steam jets will not prevent it from taking a swim in the nearby thermal wells. The fertile valley of Caspana, a stone village, and its industrious artisans will take us to the Atacama Desert Museum. An ancient human settlement, then a village founded by Spaniards, Chiu Chiu will present us with the most beautiful church in the area.
