The village of San Pedro de Atacama was the main center of The Atacama or Likanantay culture, well defended since the 12th century by the pukará de Quitor that resisted the Spanish conquistadors. Fifteen ayllus, a pre-Inca community socioeconomic organization still in force, endure near San Pedro. Currently this desert oasis village is considered to be the Archaeological Capital of Chile. Leaving St. Peter’s, the desert surprises us. The Valley of Death lives up to its name and the Valley of the Moon, today Sanctuary of Nature, shows in its extreme aridity the beauty of capricious natural formations. The oasis of Toconao amazes with its abundance and variety of fruits achieved by the hard work of the communities, whereas the nearby Jerez Valley has very good walls where you can practice climbing. In the Los Flamencos National Reserve, the beautiful and well-visited Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons at 4,200 m high, give a spectacular view to the mountains and you can feel the vastness of the natural landscape. In contrast, the salt flats of Talar and Kapur are of a bleak aridity. But when facing the ascent of the 5,450 m Láscar Volcano, the athlete will be rewarded with contemplation of the grandiose scenery of the sacred mountains that surround him. An unforgettable image. Departing from Ollague you will soon reach the immense Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt desert in the world, with more than 10,000 km2 of continuous surface, located at 3,650 meters above sea level. The unique Cactus Island is undoubtedly a must-see attraction in the salt flat. Afterwards, the Lagoon Coipasa of turquoise waters and the already almost disappeared Lake Poopó from which we will soon reach La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, guarded by the imposing Illimani and the entire Cordillera Real. Little Alpamayo is a beautiful mountain of 5,410 m. located in the middle of the Condoriri Massif that has this name for its resemblance to one of the faces of the great Alpamayo. It is barely visible from the base camp in Chiar Khota Lagoon, hidden by tarija hill a little lower than must be ascended to reach Little Alpamayo. A sharp edge leads to the summit and the eastern slope abruptly falls to the jungle anvils of the Bolivian amazon. It is a beautiful and entertaining ascent but difficult because it requires skill in the ice technique. And besides, this beautiful, entertaining and difficult Little Alpamayo is close to La Paz. Back in Chile is worth a stop the Sajama National Park and the highest summit in Bolivia. Lake Chungará with the bottom of the Nevados de Payachata is a spectacle of Nature and the incredible biodiversity that underpins the Altiplano. Descending towards the coast is the typically Aymara village of Putre, last arrested before arriving in Arica, the city of eternal spring.
