The Atacama or Likanantay culture developed around San Pedro de Atacama, a village set up in colonial times and built entirely of adobe. Today it enjoys prestige as the Archaeological Capital of Chile and the center of all regional tourism. The nearby Valley of the Moon, Sanctuary of Nature, surprises with its curious natural formations and the Valley of Death impresses with its reddish total aridity. Quitor’s pukará was built in the 12th century to defend the valley but did not withstand the siege of the Spanish conquistadors. You will know Rio Grande and Machuca, two typical Atacama villages and the unique flora and fauna of the plateau, and from here the ascent of the 5,400 m Soquete volcano with its characteristic rocky peak will begin. The hiker is then awaited by the Tatio Geysers, the largest geothermal field, managed by the neighboring indigenous community. All the natural force of seventy columns of steam shining in the sun will not prevent you from bathing peacefully in the nearby thermal wells. And from the fertile valley of Caspana, an all-built stone village, it is worth a visit to the didactic Desert Museum to rest at the end of the day in the calm of the salar de Carcote, now only a vestige of what was an ancient lake. From the border town of Ollague, beautiful view in Aymara, a short trip to the immense Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt desert in the world, with more than 10,000 km2 of continuous surface. A unique attraction in the salt flat is Cactus Island. The trip will then guide us to the turquoise Coipasa lagoon and Lake Poopó, almost disappeared and then to La Paz, the highest capital in the world, looking at the imposing Illimani and the entire Cordillera Real. In the center of the Cordillera Real and from afar it is possible to appreciate in the large massif an emblematic figure of Los Andes: the shape of a condor with its head to the center and its wings deployed to the north and south, inviting adventure. The Condor Head massif also has a dozen very popular summits that as an amphitheatre surround Lake Chiarkhota at 4,670 m. The ascent is of medium difficulty combining crossing over the moraine and then over the glacier that leads to the summit of 5,648 meters above sea level, an excursion that will give you many satisfactions without great physical demands. On the trip to Chile it is mandatory to know the Sajama National Park and the highest summit in Bolivia. And in Lauca National Park, Lake Chungará, the highest in the world with the bottom of the Nevados de Payachata is a spectacle of Nature and manifestation of the incredible biodiversity that underpins the Altiplano. Following the descent towards the coast is the village of Putre, murmur of water in Aymara, which will be the last arrest before reaching the spring city of Arica.
