Cerro Toco is an ancient volcano today asleep whose summit is 5600 meters above sea level. Its name comes from the kunza indigenous language of the Licanantay culture and means “stone”. Enjoy this hill of marked preference among hikers because it is only 60 km from San Pedro de Atacama and the ascent is relatively easy. From the top you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the neighboring volcanoes especially the imposing Licancabur and all the facilities of the ALMA International Observatory. At its base you can see the remains of an ancient sulphur farm that served copper processes in Chuquicamata.
