Volcanoes are part of the most recognized tourist attractions in the area. It is estimated to be around 2,500 Volcanoes throughout the Chilean territory. – Ojos del Salado Volcano
This 6,893-meter volcano is considered the highest in the world. At its feet lie salt flats, lagoons and an abundant biodiversity. This gigantic volcano, despite its high altitude, does not require a great deal of technical knowledge, however it does require significant mountain experience and good physical preparation. However, a key factor to consider are the low temperatures that challenge its visitors by being so unpredictable.
In addition to being a giant with exceptional views, archaeological remains associated with the Inca culture have been found on the nearby peaks. So, the cultural value is also exalted visiting the imposing volcano.
– Licancabur volcano
This is one of the most emblematic volcanoes in the northern region of Chile. For the original inhabitants of San Pedro de Atacama, it is a symbol of veneration and considered sacred. It has a crater more than 90 meters wide and rise above 5,920 meters high.
In the Atacameño language its name means “mountain of the people” and it is easily recognized because its crater has a captivating blue-green lagoon considered the fifth highest in the world.
– Villarrica volcano
Also known as the Giant of Araucanía, this iconic volcano is famous for its almost perfect conical shape. Around 10,000 tourists a year visit the park, in particular for its volcano, but also for all that the park has to offer to the visitors in terms of outdoor activities in a different period of time.
In winter, it is common for skiing activities to be carried out with amazing views of the community of Pucón and in summer, hiking and climbing predominate up to its 2,847-meter peak. The volcano is also covered by a 40 km 2 cap glacier, which makes the experience unforgettable.
– Osorno Volcano
With an altitude of 2,652 meters, this beautiful volcano is especially known because it looks like the famous Japanese volcano Mount Fuji. It is considered as the doors to the Chilean Patagonia and has been inactive for more than a century. According to a legend from Mapuche mythology, this volcano was created after a powerful ancient spirit was banished and thrown to earth.
– San José volcano
This volcano is located in the central part of the Andes. It is especially popular because it is located just 60 km east of the city of Santiago de Chile and is between 5,856 and 5,820 meters above sea level, which allows you observe its surprising size from several kilometers away.
Its gigantic nature is part of the landscape in such a way that it gives shape to the other volcanic complexes that compose the geographical central andes mountains. According to the Volcanological Observatory of the Southern Andes, San José is a volcano with stable behavior which does not represent a risk for the population.
