We’re in Laguna San Rafael National Park. Puerto Bertrand will be the starting point of this ten-day tour in which we will walk among the blizzards that tear to the southwest of the great San Valentín ice field forming glacial lagoons that finally discharge their waters into Chile’s most flowing river, the Baker River. Going up the valley of the Soler River through endless forests of phaceans, from the infallible Mirador opens the view to the valley where three hanging glaciers await us tomorrow when we walk next to the Neff glacier to the point where we must cross it and approach the Colonia glacier, the largest of all. The effects of climate change are already visible throughout this glacial system: a manifest decline in some languages, an increase in the volume of melting lagoons and the flow of baker’s short tributary rivers. With its imposing white moleazulated the Cologne glacier rewards the fatigues of the trip and gives the hiker a sense of gratitude because he has been lucky enough to be there.
