The small Cordillera del Avellano south of Coyhaique is a recent discovery of mountaineering in Chilean Patagonia that has so far been very little visited. It has no shelters or support for hikers, there is no proper mapping and no signposted the ancient logging trails now used by Chilean and foreign visitors. This granitic complex was sculpted by glaciers that created an unusual geography of needles, towers and walls ideal for very technical climbing similar to those that could be found in the Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine. Each face and tower presents different challenges and difficulties to climbers with the North Tower being the easiest to access. Excursions start in Cerro Castillo and Puerto Robinson villa and it is necessary to spend at least three days exploring the different alternatives offered by this place.
