In the distant Region of Aisén, one of the most required hikes is the one that in four days surrounds the entire Cerro Castillo massif in the National Park of the same name. Ancient hunting territory of the Tehuelches tribes of Patagonia today is still a province that preserves its natural heritage safe from environmental deterioration. The extensive forests of lengas, ñirres and coigs are shown all the way alternating with areas of steppe and thickets of calafate and chilco. Wild orchids will appear in December. From the turquoise lagoon the view encompasses the characteristic landscape of this area and overlaps with the hanging glaciers of the Hill that from the Mirador seem to be touched with the hand inviting you to walk on the moraine. The Park protects shy “huemules”, pumas, “chuingues” and foxes that you can hopefully see and photograph by peeking out of the woods as you go. Cerro Castillo and its surroundings live up to the well-known regional motto “Aysén, Reserva de Vida”.
