The Pacana Route is an excursion that will transport us to geological times when the ancient ices of the last glaciation began to spill from the tops and towards the valleys modeling the landscape of Atacama. In los Flamencos National Reserve, the Monks of the Pecan, also known as Sentinels of Tara or Moais de Tara are one of the not-so-known attractions of San Pedro de Atacama. These imposing vertical stone formations in the Salar de Aguas Calientes formed by wind erosion for millennia impose respect for their height and resemblance to the silhouette of the monks, which has earned them their correct name. Nearby, hundreds of strange and capricious formations created by volcanic eruptions and ice erosion give this whole place an appearance reminiscent of Earth’s origins. The flocks of flamingos and herds of vicuñas settled in the nearby bofedales return the visitor to the present reality.
