San Pedro de Atacama is the nucleus of Atacama tourism activity and enjoys a well-deserved prestige abroad as a must-see when traveling to Chile. The Valley of the Moon, Sanctuary of Nature, is the magic of the desert and a landscape that fascinates by its formations and colors. Nearby is the pukará de Quitor, a National Monument dating back to the 12th century that resisted the siege of Spanish invaders. Rio Grande, located in the fertile valley of the river of the same name, is a charming little village built in stone. Then the 5,350 m. Cerro Soquete will put us to the test. The Sanctuary of Nature of El Tatio amazes the traveler because the strength of the geysers manifests itself there in splendor at dawn creating a magnificent spectacle. Anyone who visits this place can’t forget it. And from here to Caspana, which exhibits the ancient stone architecture and is surrounded by crops of a very organized community. The permanent fumaroles of the Aucanquilcha volcano, with more than 6000 m on its four summits, the ancient site of an Inca shrine, await the intrepid hiker. And from Ollague to Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt desert in the world, with more than 10,000 km2 of continuous surface, where the unique Cactus Island is undoubtedly a must-see attraction. The trip then takes us to the turquoise Coipasa lagoon and the almost defunct Poopó Lake from which we will reach La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, guarded by the imposing Illimani and the entire Cordillera Real. In the north of the great Cordillera Real a voluminous mountain with several flanks dominates the landscape. It is the Ancohuma, white waters in Aymara, of 6,427 meters above sea level, the second highest in this mountain range after the Illimani, which together with the adjoining Nevado Illampu a spectacular massif of about 200 km2 particularly notable for its large glacial mass. Since ancient venerated by the Aymara because their gods had built in it a great wall that made it impassable for mortals, Cerro Ancohuma is difficult to climb all its faces although it only rises about two thousand meters from its base. Starting from the picturesque village of Sorata in two days of walking to the wonderful Glacier Lagoon (5,200 m) from which you can see the immense Titicaca, the excursion continues to ascend on granite rocks and glacial moraine. On the fourth day, after the difficult journey over the glacier, the summit will reward the mountaineer. Back in Chile you cannot ignore the Sajama National Park and the highest summit in Bolivia that is well worth a stoppage. The magnificent Chungará Lake with the bottom of the Nevados de Payachata is a spectacle of Nature and evidence of the incredible biodiversity that is able to sustain the Altiplano. Following the descent towards the coast is the village of Putre, last arrest before reaching the Chilean Jewel of the North, the spring city of Arica.
