Cerro Castillo National Park is abundant in natural beauties of interest to admirers of landscapes, adventurers and artists. Ascent to cerro the New Zealand camp is an advantageous viewpoint from the best slope towards the valley and near there the Duff lagoon offers a place of rest and contemplation, an encounter with itself. In contrast, days later as we crossed the Nef glacier in striving march with grampons we felt the vastness of the ice masses and our own weakness in the face of natural forces. Lake Cachet 2 is an observatory of the glaciological phenomenon that has been repeated in this seemingly calm lake. Rising temperatures have favored the fracture of the glacier by overloading the lake with water and icebergs whose pressure tears down the containment barrier and causes a sudden and violent overflow that greatly increases the flow of downstream rivers. It is here, downstream, that the Nef river of murky waters from the melting of glaciers joins the great Baker River with crystal clear waters and without mixing flow long stretch ignoring itself in the same channel. The Baker’s flowing jump will be the last impression the visitor will make upon returning to Puerto Bertrand.
