On the eastern edge of Bolivia’s great plateau, southeast of Lake Titicaca, stands majestic Cordillera Real that some called “the Himalayas of the New World” because it undoubtedly lives up to its name as Royal. This massif about 125 km long presents a succession of granite peaks that gathers eight mountains of six thousand meters and more than twenty summits of five thousand, from the Illimani (6,460 meters above sea level) at its southern end to the Illampu (6,368 m) very close to Lake Titicaca. It seems strange but this mountain range has numerous glaciers although it is located just 17 degrees south of the equator, which is explained by its proximity to the Amazon rainforest and its large masses of moisture-laden air. Soon a succession of high mountains and green valleys, lagoons that look like mirrors, incredible glaciers in the middle of the tropical area, fairytale villages and people who live just like their ancestral grandparents. This is all the Bolivian Cordillera Real. The tour you will start will take you to know a no lesser sample of the beauties of this majestic Mountain Range that is pride of the Bolivians. Departing from the village of Sorata, a postcard from the Altiplano, and for a fortnight you will know picturesque mountain places such as Jumuco, Lakhativa and the unique village of Ancohuma, at 4,800 m altitude at the foot of the imposing Illampu. Then come Cocoyo and Palca, no less interesting, and one after the other the Khotia, Surakhota and Ajwani lagoons, the “bird lagoon”, already having in sight the most beautiful mountain, they say, which is the Condoriri.
